Does the brand really matter?
Yes and no. A good brand means consistent quality from roll to roll, a proper hardwearing backing, an honest wear rating, and a warranty you can actually claim on if something goes wrong. A cheap unbranded carpet can look identical in the shop and then flatten or shed within a couple of years.
That said, the most expensive brand in the world will still look poor if it is fitted badly, so the brand is only half the story. More on that at the end, because it is the part most people never get told.
Cormar Carpets
Cormar is the brand we fit most, so it is the one I know best. It is a British manufacturer based in the Bury area of Greater Manchester, set up in 1956 and still privately owned. All of its carpet, the easy-clean, soft deep pile, wool twist and wool loop ranges, is made at its own mills.
What makes it such a sensible choice for everyday Bedford homes is the balance of quality and value. - Ulster Carpets. The premium end of the market, known for woven wool carpets of real quality. This is what you look at when budget is not the main concern and you want something special that will last a very long time.
- Penthouse. A British manufacturer with a reputation for premium wool-rich carpets and careful craftsmanship.
- Cavalier. Strong stain-resistant polypropylene ranges that offer good value for busy homes with children and pets.
Wool brands or synthetic specialists?
A simple way to narrow it down is to decide what you care about most. If you want the natural feel and warmth of wool, look at Brockway, Ulster, or the wool ranges from Cormar. If stain resistance and value for a busy household matter more, the easy-clean polypropylene from Cormar or Cavalier will serve you better. There is no wrong answer, only the right fit for how your home actually gets used.
The bit most people miss: fitting matters as much as the brand
Here is what no showroom will tell you while they are selling you a brand. A premium carpet fitted badly, with loose seams, poor stretching or visible joins, will look worse and wear out faster than a mid-range carpet fitted properly.
The brand gets you a good product. The fitter is what makes it sit right, last, and still look good in ten years.
