Carpet underlay is the part of your floor you never see, and it is the part most people never ask about. That is a shame, because it does more for how your carpet feels and how long it lasts than almost anything else. Skimp on it and you will feel the difference, just not straight away.
Here is what is really going on under your carpet, and why two quotes for the “same” carpet can feel completely different a couple of years down the line.
Why underlay matters more than you think
Good underlay does three jobs. It gives you that soft, cushioned feel underfoot. It protects the back of the carpet from the hard floor below, so the carpet wears more slowly and keeps its looks. And it adds warmth and quiet to the room.
Put simply, the carpet is what you see, but the underlay is what you feel. A lovely carpet on poor underlay will never feel as good as it should, and it will not last as long either.
The cheap underlay trap
The most common budget underlay you will come across is a cheap foam like Super 10. Here is the catch with it. On the day it is fitted, and for the first month or two, it feels lovely. Soft, bouncy, exactly what you wanted. You would never know.
The problem shows up later. Cheap underlay is not dense, so it flattens. Within a year or two it has compressed down, especially where you walk most, and the spring goes out of it. Your carpet starts to feel hard and tired underfoot, and most people blame the carpet. Nine times out of ten it is not the carpet, it is the underlay that has given up beneath it.
This is often what is hiding behind a quote that looks surprisingly cheap. The carpet might be fine, but the underlay has been dropped to the cheapest option to bring the price down. You save a little now and feel it for years.
Why thickness is not the whole story
A lot of people assume thicker means better, but it is density that counts, not just millimetres. A thick cheap underlay can be less dense, and flatten faster, than a slightly thinner quality one. So a 9mm dense underlay can outlast and outperform a 10mm budget one with ease.

How to check what is in your quote
When you get a carpet quote from anyone, do not just accept “underlay included”. Ask the simple question: which underlay, and how dense is it? A good supplier will tell you the brand and the spec without hesitating. If the answer is vague, that is usually a sign the cheapest option is going down.
