You have chosen your carpet, you have had the quote, and now there is one practical question left. How long does carpet fitting take? The honest answer is that most jobs are quicker than people expect. A single room is often done in an hour or two, and a typical three-bedroom house is usually finished in a day. Here is what to expect, and what can stretch the carpet fitting time a little longer.
Every home is different, so the only way to know your exact timings is a proper measure. Ours is free, and you can book a free measure online in about a minute with no obligation.
A rough guide to carpet fitting time
As a general rule, here is how it tends to go:
- A single bedroom or small room: around one to two hours.
- A large living room: roughly two to three hours.
- Stairs and landing: usually half a day, as they take more care and skill.
- A whole three-bedroom house: most often a full day.
These are guides, not promises. A simple, empty room flies by. Add stairs, furniture and an old floor to lift, and the carpet fitting time naturally grows.
What affects carpet fitting time
A few things make the biggest difference to how long your fit takes.
Stairs. Stairs are slow and skilled work. Every step has to be wrapped neatly, so a staircase alone can take as long as a couple of rooms.
Furniture. A clear room is a quick room. We will always move the heavy items, but the more you can shift beforehand, the faster we work.
Lifting the old floor. Taking up and removing an old carpet, gripper and underlay adds time before the new one can go down.
The subfloor. If the floor underneath needs attention, that adds time. We cover that next.
Pattern matching. Patterned carpets take longer to cut and line up than a plain one, especially across doorways.
When the subfloor adds a bit of time
Sometimes the floor underneath your carpet needs a little work first. An uneven or dusty subfloor may need smoothing or sealing so the new carpet sits flat and lasts. In a new build, a fresh screed can need drying time too. None of this takes long, but it is worth doing properly. A good carpet only performs as well as the floor beneath it.
How to make fitting day go quickly
You can help your carpet fitting time stay short with a little prep.
- Clear small items, ornaments and anything breakable from the rooms.
- Empty wardrobes and drawers if the units need moving.
- Take doors off if you think they may catch on a thicker new carpet, or just mention it and we will sort it.
- Sort out parking near the door so rolls can come in easily.
Do that, and the team can get straight to work the moment they arrive.
