What is twist pile?
Twist pile is a cut pile carpet where the yarn is twisted tightly so the fibre ends stand upright. That twist is what gives it its character. It makes the carpet springy and hardwearing, and it helps hide footprints and vacuum marks, so the carpet looks tidy with very little effort.
This is the all-rounder, the carpet most people end up choosing because it copes with almost anything. It is the sensible pick for stairs, hallways, landings and busy family living rooms. What is Saxony?
Saxony is also a cut pile, but the fibres are longer and less tightly twisted, so they lie softer and plusher. The result is that deep, velvety, luxurious feel underfoot that people fall in love with in the showroom.
The trade-off is that Saxony shows footprints, vacuum lines and pressure marks from furniture, and the longer pile takes a bit more keeping on top of in a busy room. None of that matters in a low-traffic room, which is why Saxony is at its best in bedrooms and formal lounges. What is loop pile?
Loop pile is exactly what it sounds like. The loops of yarn are left uncut, giving a textured, casual look you might know as Berber. It is very hardwearing and brilliant at disguising dirt, and it comes as level loop for a uniform finish or multi-level loop for a bit of pattern.
There is one important catch. Those uncut loops can snag, and a claw or a sharp object will pull a loop and run a line across the carpet. That makes loop pile a poor choice if you have cats or dogs with claws. In a pet-free home that needs something tough and practical, though, it is a strong option.
Which pile suits which room
